Graeme’s Story: From Nursing to Nurturing

After years working as a nurse in operating theatres, Graeme thought he’d seen every side of care, calm under pressure, teamwork, precision, and compassion. But something was missing. While volunteering with youth groups, he rediscovered the spark that first drew him into caring: the chance to connect, guide and watch people grow.

“When I came across Care Visions, I’ll be honest, I’d never heard of them,” he says. “At my stage of life, it felt like a bit of a gamble, but everything I read sounded so positive that I decided to give it a go.”

Two and a half years later, that gamble feels more like a calling. “The difference between nursing and residential care is huge,” Graeme explains. “But the heart of it’s the same — empathy and care. The only real change is time. You’re not looking after someone for a few days; you’re part of their life for years.”

Graeme describes the homes as warm, lively and full of shared purpose. “You cook together, help with homework, play games, laugh, fall out and make up again. It’s family life and before long, it feels like your second home.”

What keeps him here? The support and the relationships. “You’re never on your own,” he says. “From managers to training to your team, everyone’s got your back. It’s about growing together, just like the young people do.”

If he could give one piece of advice to anyone thinking about it? “Just do it,” Graeme smiles. “This isn’t a job you’ll regret. Every day’s a new challenge, every day’s a joy, and when a young person achieves something, it makes everything worth it.”
