Therapeutic Care Beyond the Therapy Room: Everyday Moments That Heal with Ruth Emond
In our upcoming not to be missed Professional Talk, University of Stirling’s Ruth Emond shares how everyday moments, from making a cup of tea to bedtime conversations, can be just as powerful as formal therapy. Drawing on her co-authored book A Guide to Therapeutic Childcare, Ruth explores the balance between theory and relationships, and why joy, play, and being alongside children can matter more than structured interventions.
Who is this talk for?
This not to missed talk is for anyone with an interest in children’s wellbeing and development and supporting recovery from trauma. It will be most compelling for professionals working in residential child care and foster care and those involved in social work, education, therapy and counselling.
Date/Time; Wed 27th Aug 2025, 19:00 BST - Online
Ruth Emond is a part time senior lecturer at the University of Stirling. She is currently Head of the Social Work subject group. She has undertaken a range of research that encompasses how the everyday experiences of children looked after away from home can be optimised to support and enable growth development and support recovery from adversity. This has included the significance of routines, friendships and the role food and food practices. Working part-time part time as a social worker and play therapist at a therapeutic service for children in Perth, Ruth also continues to find joy in direct practice with children and brings a wealth of this experience to the talk.
