When developing Why Not? the priority was rooting the relationships at the centre of everything.  There were not external guidelines and rules to follow, the practice was needs-led and the policies and procedures (including for safeguarding) were developed to ensure people were empowered to do what was required in the best interests of the young person.

The impact on the relationship from any process was fully recognised and was an integrated aspect of all developments.

Now The Why Not? Trust, a charitable organisation, gives us an example of the positive impact supported continuing relationships can have on young people, adults and the community; and importantly how this can be safely developed without restrictive systems and processes.

The Promise encourages us to take the same approach for all our future practice, reflecting on our existing provision and developing a country that cares

It is an opportunity we all need to grasp.
